Why women play Walking Football

Women have been playing Walking Football nearly as long as men have, but the growth in the last few years has been tremendous and this is only set to continue.

This growth has seen the introduction of Women’s England teams in several age groups and many more women only clubs. The women’s game is exactly the same as the men’s, except women start to play Walking Football competitively at over 40’s.

The WFA is committed to supporting the women’s game at all levels and, in particular, the grassroots level.

A historic day for Wythenshawe and walking football. Renegade Lionesses are set for their debut match on Saturday 8th June 2025, at Bolton Arena. Watch for the photographs as our Women's First Team go into action for the very first time.

Saturday 8th June 2025, Wythenshawe Renegades Lionesses played their debut match at Bolton Arena. This was a three-game match against three different teams. Unlike the Lionesses, they had prior experience as a team. This was the first time we played as a full team, we expected to be heavily beaten. the three game scores were 3-0 / 0-0 / 1-0. We came away with no goals but didn't suffer the expected overwhelming defeat. Even got a point on the table in the Lancashire League of which we are now a part.

There was a few shaky nerves from a few of our players, not knowing what to expect. But there was plenty of team talk and encouragement from the captain (14) and from Vince, the team manager and one of the Lioness training session coaches. These two knew the capabilities of each and every player, and this was taken into account when positions given out to the team.

At the end of the session the team came away happy with the success and achievement. Our defence was strong and the few goals the oppositions got, had to be worked for. This has set a bar for future games, (our next league match is in July.) Renegade Lionesses are always on the look out for new players, whether experienced or having never kicked a ball in your life. Our training will give you all you need to bring out the player in you.
